The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), which is run by CAS, the country's top research organization, held its first opening ceremony Thursday after changing its name from the Graduate University of CAS (GUCAS) in June.

Founded in 1978 as China's first graduate school, the GUCAS is an esteemed post-graduate study base in science and technology fields. The institution has graduated 99,700 students to date, and nearly half of them have graduated with doctoral degrees.

Backed by CAS's science research capacities and team of researchers, University of CAS is a "super-school" with four campuses in Beijing, five education bases in the rest of the country and 117 research institutes located across China.

It boasts an 11,200-person faculty, including around 340 academicians. Academician with CAS or Chinese Academy of Engineering is considered China's top academic title.

Bai Chunli, president of both CAS and University of CAS, told Thursday's ceremony that CAS has long been an explorer and pioneer in promoting post-graduate education and scientific and technology innovation in China.

University of CAS will unswervingly forge ahead with its mission of nurturing talented people for the country's scientific innovation drive, Bai said. (Xinua)
