As President of the Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (GUCAS) and as one of its first graduates, I am pleased to welcome you to China's largest and most comprehensive graduate university in terms of graduate enrollments and diversity of scientific disciplines.
The disciplines represented at GUCAS include all major fields of science, technology, and engineering. The three campuses in Beijing and five education centers in other parts of China are the cornerstone of a large and dynamic education and research network incorporating over 100 institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The long-standing national and international reputation in education and research at GUCAS is complemented and supported by 100 CAS institutes and over 300 Members of CAS and of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). The University's strength is also enhanced by its adoption of unified student recruitment strategies, unified education management and unified degree-conferment, which are processes managed through cooperation between GUCAS and CAS institutes.
The GUCAS model for developing candidates at both Masters and PhD levels emphasizes developing the combination of skills acquired through course work and practical research. This approach is fostered by combining core course studies at GUCAS with scientific research and thesis preparation at partner institutes. Student development is also enhanced through emphasizing on cross-disciplinary education across scientific disciplines and between science and engineering and social sciences. The GUCAS model also provides graduates with a broad base of training to ensure that they are adaptable to evolving fields of research and prepared to do research at the frontiers of scientific discovery. GUCAS graduates are ready to integrate their new skills into the workforces of research, engineering and technological advancement.
"Seeking practicality and truth, promoting cooperation and innovation" is the worthy creed of GUCAS and represents the ideals engendered in GUCAS training. Students are encouraged to freely explore ideas, to interact across disciplines, to respect a diversity of views and to reflect on their own abilities and progress.
GUCAS is a vibrant education institution for graduates and I invite you to join us in developing the people, knowledge and skills necessary to tackle the challenges of the twenty-first century.
